LONG BEACH, Calif. - UNLV tied up Long Beach State midway through the second half, but the 49ers (7-3-1) then scored three goals in a five-minute span to claim a 4-1 victory over the Rebels (3-7-1) in women's college soccer action on Friday afternoon at George Allen Field.
It was a scoreless game in the first half, with LBSU taking six shots to three for the Rebels. One minute into the second half the 49ers got on the scoreboard when Nadia Link scored from the left side off an assist by Sidney Garza in the 46th minute. UNLV would tie the game in the 65th minute after drawing a foul in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Senior Katherine Orellana converted the PK for her second goal of the year, making the score 1-1.
Link put LBSU ahead for good in the 71st minute when she drove into the box and sent a shot to the right post for a 2-1 lead with 70:07 on the clock. Thirty-five seconds later came the next 49er goal, this time on a one-timer by Nicole Hubbard off assists by Nicole Sweetman and Shawna Gordon. The final goal of the night came in the 75th minute, when a shot that was saved bounced out to Sweetman, and she sent it back into the net for a 4-1 49ers advantage.
LBSU finished with a 16-8 edge on shots for the game, and 8-3 on shots on goal. Kylie Wassell finished with four saves in goal for the Rebels, while in the LBSU net, Kaitlyn Gustaves posted two saves.
UNLV will remain in California for its next game, a Sunday, 1 pm contest at Cal State Fullerton.
