LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV freshman Rodrigo Fuentes scored the first goal of his career to help the Rebels earn a 1-1 tie at Loyola Marymount after two overtime periods on Friday afternoon in men's college soccer action.
After a scoreless half, LMU (0-1-1) struck first in the 62nd minute for a 1-0 advantage, thanks to a 30-yard blast by Pedro Velaquez. Sean Sears assisted on the score. Just three minutes later UNLV (0-2-1) would knot the score up at one each when Fuentes took a pass from Salvador Bernal and drove into the left side of the box before sending a shot that beat the keeper to the far post.
Neither team could come up with a second goal in regulation, sending the Rebels to overtime for the first time this season. And it was the Rebels that kept up the pressure in the extra time, with a 4-1 edge on shots in the first overtime. LMU took the only shot of the second overtime period, and the final result was a tie decision.
UNLV finished the day with a 14-12 edge on shots, as well as a 7-3 advantage on shots on goal. Corner kicks though were in favor of the Lions, 9-2. Joe Vitale posted two saves in goal for UNLV, while Billy Thompson finished with six for LMU.
The Rebels conclude their four-game road swing to start the season on Sunday with a 5 pm contest at Cal State Fullerton in Titan Stadium.
