Rebels Are Golden

Box Score

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - For the first time in school history the UNLV women's soccer team has won back-to-back double-overtime contests, as junior Jenn Wolfe scored the golden goal just under two minutes into the second overtime to lift the Rebels past Florida Atlantic 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The victory, coming in the final game of the UNLV Rebel Classic at Peter Johann Memorial Field, improved UNLV to 3-2-1 on the year, while FAU dropped to 1-4.

The game-winner, which was also Wolfe's team-leading fourth score of the year, was started when freshman Addy Guida headed the ball to classmate Susie Bernal in the right corner. Bernal then sent a cross into the middle of the box, where a Rebel attempted to head the ball but missed. However, her attempt drew FAU goalie Ashley Lantes out of position, giving Wolfe an easier shot when the cross landed at her feet right, and she quickly scored cross cage to the right post in the 102nd minute of the contest.

FAU scored the day's first goal just under five minutes in, when Taylor Sorrels took the ball to the middle of the field, just outside the box, and unleashed a blast from 25 yards out that just cleared UNLV goalie Kylie Wassel's hands for a score. UNLV would tie the game in the 36th minute, on senior Macy Jo Harrison's third assist of the weekend. Thanks to a foul on FAU, the Rebels were awarded a free kick, and from behind the midfield line Harrison served up a long ball into the middle of the box, where it was headed in by senior Caitlin Allen, to make it a 1-1 game.

That would be the halftime score, and though the Rebels held a 6-4 edge on shots in the second half, the game would go to overtime. It was the second straight overtime game for UNLV after a 2-1 double-overtime win over Oklahoma on Aug. 31 on the first day of the Rebel Classic.

UNLV finished the afternoon with a 16-10 edge on shots, and 5-1 on corner kicks. Wassell finished with six saves for UNLV, while Lantes posted four for the Owls.

The Rebels will return to action next weekend by hosting another tournament, the UNLV Nike Invitational, on Sept. 7 and 9. On Friday, UNLV will take on Sacramento State at 7 pm, while Indiana State and Montana play at 4:30 pm.
