SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV came up short in its attempt for a first road win of the season, falling by a 3-1 score at San Diego State in college men's soccer action on Friday night from the SDSU Sports Deck.

The Aztecs (4-2-1) built up a two-goal advantage in the first half. That included the night's first goal, a score in the 9th minute on a header by Evyn Hewett off a cross from Jose Altamirano. SDSU extended the lead to two in the 30th minute with a long blast by Blake Wise over the Rebel goalkeeper. Morgan Sacco assisted on the score. SDSU ended the half with a 2-0 edge, while holding a 12-8 advantage on shots in the opening 45 minutes.

UNLV (2-6-1) put itself on the scoreboard in the 54th minute after drawing a penalty kick. Julian Portugal would convert the try for UNLV, his second in as many games, to bring the Rebels within a goal, down 2-1. The Rebels put more pressure on SDSU in the second half, taking a total of 11 shots, but it would be the Aztecs who would score the next goal of the game. This one came in the 74th minute, a strike by Kevin Bick from 15 yards out off an assist by Altamirano.

SDSU finished with a 24-19 edge on shots, and 12-10 on shots on goal. The 19 shots total were a season-high for the Rebels. Corner kicks were 6-1 in favor of the Aztecs. Both goalkeepers, Joe Vitale for UNLV and Blake Hylen, finished with nine saves each on the night.

UNLV will play its final non-conference game of the season on Sunday, with a 1 pm contest at Sacramento State.
