ALPHARETTA, Ga. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 13 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 1-over-par 281 on Sunday to grab the outright team lead after round one of play at the PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational, which is being played at the Capital City Club Crabapple (par 70, 7,248 yards), which is also the site of the 2013 NCAA Men's Division I Championship.
The Rebels lead second-place UCLA by one shot as the Bruins are 2-over after 18 holes. New Mexico, host Georgia Tech and San Diego State are all tied for third at 7-over, while Georgia and Arkansas are tied for sixth at 8-over.
Individually, San Diego State's Tom Berry has the lead after a 3-under 67. UNLV sophomore Kurt Kitayama, Arkansas' Taylor Moore and Chattanooga's Chris Robb are all tied for second, one shot back, at 2-under 68. Kitayama had five birdies and three bogeys on the day. Two other golfers turned in first rounds at under par as there is a two-way tie for fifth at 1-under.
UNLV junior Blake Biddle, freshman AJ McInerney and senior Kevin Penner are all tied for 11th at 1-over 71. Sophomore Carl Jonsonis tied for 26th at 2-over 72.
The 15-team, 75-individual tournament features 14 teams that were listed among Golfweek's preseason top 25 in the nation. The tournament will continue on Monday with tee times beginning at 9 a.m. ET and will conclude on Tuesday with tee times starting at 8 a.m. ET., with 18 holes scheduled for each day.
