Rebels Fall In MPSF Opener

Sept. 29, 2012

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - CSU Bakersfield (4-1-4, 1-0 MPSF) used a strong second half to hand UNLV (2-8-1, 0-1) a 5-1 loss in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer opener for both teams on Saturday night from Main Soccer Field.

The score was tied 1-1 at halftime, until the Roadrunners scored the eventual game-winner in the 48th minute on Lucas Dall'Orso's first score of the night. He added a second goal in the 61st minute to put CSU Bakersfield up 3-1. Gyasi Zardes then sealed the win for the home team after posting goals in the 74th and 80th minute.

UNLV actually held a 1-0 lead after senior Nick Marshall scored his fifth goal of the year. This one came as Julian Portugal was looking to score a fourth penalty kick in as many games. His attempt failed, but Marshall was there to put the rebound back into the net for the score in the 28th minute. That lead would hold until the 35th minute, when Jesus Sanchez headed in a shot from three years out to tie the game for the Roadrunners at 1-1.

CSU Bakersfield finished the game with a 20-8 edge on shots, and 10-3 on shots on goal. Joe Vitale collected five saves in the net for UNLV, while Eric Shannon posted for CSUB.

UNLV will return home for its next pair of games, playing league opponents Seattle on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 pm, and San Jose State on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1 pm. Both games will be at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
