FALL BASEBALL: Rebels Wrap Up Sixth Scrimmage

Oct. 13, 2013

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball scrimmaged for the sixth time this fall at Earl E. Wilson Stadium on Saturday morning.

Kenny Oakley, Joey Armstrong and Erik VanMeetren led the way for the Black squad as they beat the Red team 6-3. Oakley threw four innings and allowed one run on one hit and one walk while throwing 47 pitches.

Both VanMeetren and Joey Armstrong had two hits and scored two runs while VanMeetren recorded three RBIs.

"Outside of three or four individual performances it wasn't pretty," associate head coach Stan Stolte said. "We didn't play hard enough or smart enough. We quit on a couple plays defensively and didn't play catch and that is unacceptable. It was basically unwatchable today. We've got four practices to clean it up for next weekend which we plan on doing."

The Rebels will be off Monday and Tuesday and will continue practicing as they get ready to host Cal State Fullerton next weekend for two exhibition games. The first pitch next Saturday against the Titans will be at 12:00 p.m. and first pitch of the second contest on Sunday will be at 1:00 p.m.

There will be no charge for admission and fans are invited to attend both games.

Red Team Beats Black Team 3-2 in fifth scrimmage (Oct. 11) - The Red team defeated the Black team 3-2 in the seven-inning scrimmage. Matt McCallister hit a bases loaded single in bottom of seventh and drove in Patrick Armstrong with the winning run with one out. TJ White opened the scoring as he hit a double, driving in Joey Armstrong in top of first. Joey Armstrong drove in the second run for the Red team in fourth.

Brayden Torres pitched the last three innings in relief of Cody Roper to get the win. Bryan Bonnell pitched well for the Black team, but was stuck with the loss in relief of Joey Lauria who also threw four good innings!

"It was a really well played scrimmage," associate head coach Stan Stolte said. "All four pitchers had very solid outings and that was very encouraging. It was a fairly clean scrimmage and was good to see some kids perform under pressure in the last couple innings."

Black Team Outswings Red Team (Oct. 5) - The black team dominated red team and was led by Joey Swanner, Patrick Armstrong and Morgan Stotts. They all recorded multiple hits and walks at the plate. Bryan Bonnell and Brayden Torres shutdown the red team in the eight-inning scrimmage from the mound. Bonnell started the scrimmage and went four innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out three. Torres struck out the first four batters and allowed only one hit as he faced the minimum 12 hitters in four innings of work.

"The Black team played good baseball while red team was a poster child for bad baseball," associate head coach Stan Stolte said. "The Red team didn't throw strikes or play catch. That's why they got pounded."

Pitching Still Strong Through Second Week (Oct. 4) - John Richy and Kenny Oakley matched each other almost identically in a pitchers' duel. They both threw four solid innings and allowed only one run on two hits and each, while striking out four. Offensively T.J. White and freshmen Connor Clark led the way with two hits each.

"Both teams played hard until the final out, which is part of our culture," associate head coach Stan Stolte said. "Now we just have to clean up some mistakes. Richy pitched like a dominant Friday guy today and Oakley didn't back down and matched him inning for inning which was great to see."

Pitching Highlights Second Scrimmage (Sept. 28)- From the plate Matt McCallister and Scott Tomassetti led the Rebels in the second scrimmage of the fall. Both singled with bases loaded, which scored two runs. From the mound, Bryan Bonnell, Brayden Torres and Matt Thomas all threw three shutout innings. Thomas was the most dominant, as he only threw 24 pitches in his appearance.

"Right now our pitchers are obviously ahead of the hitters," associate head coach Stan Stolte said. "They did a good job since we are only throwing fastballs and change ups and hitters have figured that out. We have got a long way to go but it was a good opening weekend."

First Scrimmage A Success (Sept. 27) - UNLV baseball held its first scrimmage of the fall Friday, September 27 at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. It was a controlled scrimmage and some innings started with baserunners on. The hitting stars were Joey Armstrong with three hits and TJ white with two. On the mound John Richy and Cody Roper were both strong, as each threw three innings and only allowed one hit.

"We were very happy with today's scrimmage," said associate head coach Stan Stolte. "The kids played with a lot of energy. We have some strong competition at almost every position and for every role on the mound, which is the first time we've been able to say that since we started here. We just need let the kids play it out and win their jobs."
