LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball used a four-run first inning to defeat Cal State Fullerton 5-3 in the first exhibition game of the weekend.
"I was excited about our effort," head coach Tim Chambers said. "We had zero errors and recorded four double plays that bailed us out of some situations during the game. We also hit the ball really well and had multiple extra base hits."
The four double plays backed the solid pitching of John Richy, Bryan Bonnell and Brayden Torres. Richy went 3.2 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out six and walking two. Bonnell relieved him and pitched 3.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits. Torres recorded the save after pitching 2.0 shutout innings and forcing two double plays to shut down the Titan rallies.
UNLV opened the game by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Patrick Armstrong drove in the first two runs of the game by hitting a double scoring Joey Armstrong and T.J. White. Patrick Armstong scored when Erik VanMeetren tripled in the next at-bat. Justin Jones drove in VanMeetren with an infield single to give the Rebels a 4-0 lead.
UNLV scored its fifth run in the fifth inning when Morgan Stotts hit an RBI single that scored Joey Swanner.
UNLV and Cal State Fullerton will play their final exhibition game of the fall on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Admission is free and fans are encouraged to attend.
