SANTEE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (12-17) capped off their stay in San Diego with a 5-0 victory over the Massachusetts Minutewomen (2-15) on Sunday morning in their final game at the San Diego Classic II. UNLV's offense was led by Tayler Van Acker and Alyssa Cordova, who both had two hits and two RBI on the day, while teammate Amanda Oliveto hurled her fourth career no-hitter in the process.
The Scarlet & Gray got the scoring started in the second inning with a two-run single by Cordova off UMass starter Emma Mendoker (0-7). Tayler Aleman and Pauline Monreal scored on the base hit after they had initially reached safely via a fielding error and a walk. Both runners had been placed in scoring position after Heather Harrison put down a sacrifice bunt.
Cordova was involved in the Rebels' scoring two innings later when she laid down a squeeze bunt to score Monreal from third. Monreal had led off the frame with a walk, and then found herself on third after she took the base when no one covered it following another sacrifice by Harrison.
UNLV added two insurance tallies in the seventh when Tayler Van Acker smashed a two-run dinger to right. Jamie DePippo scored on the play after she was issued a two-out walk by UMass reliever Bridget Lemire.
Oliveto faced four batters over the minimum and only allowed six to reach base. Her 21 outs were broken down by 12 on the ground, five strikeouts, three infield pop ups and one fly out. She did walk one and hit one batter.
UNLV returns to action next week in their fourth and final home tournament of the 2013 season. They Rebels will welcome Texas Tech, Tulsa and Boise State to town for the Rebel Classic on March 22-24. They will only play three games with two on Friday, March 22 - 4:15 pm vs. Tulsa and 6:30 pm vs. Texas Tech - and one on Saturday, March 23 - 1:30 pm vs. Tulsa.
NOTES: After this weekend's play, Oliveto improved her standing in four of UNLV's career pitching records ... She now ranks sixth in innings pitched (522.2); seventh in both game started (77) and shutouts (10); and ninth in appearances (101) ... She is already listed in six other categories ... Van Acker, who got hit by two pitches this weekend, sits third overall with third with 21.
