Rebels In Third Place After First Day In Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot 1-under-par 283 during the first round of play at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Friday and is in third place, seven shots off the lead. The 18-team, 100-individual tournament is being played at Karsten Golf Course (par 71, 7,013 yards).

New Mexico leads the field by five shots at 8-under 276, followed by San Diego State in second at 3-under. California and Oregon State are both one shot behind the Rebels in a tie for fourth at even par.

Oregon State's Nick Chianello has a two-shot lead at 7-under 64, followed by San Diego State's Tom Berry and New Mexico's Victor Perez, who are both tied for second at 5-under.

The Rebels are led by sophomore Kurt Kitayama, who is three shots back in fourth place at 4-under 67. Senior Kevin Penner is tied for 16th at even-par 71, sophomore Carl Jonson is tied for 28th at 1-over 72, freshman AJ McInerney is tied for 39th at 2-over 73 and junior Nicholas Maruriis tied for 51st at 3-over 74.

The tournament will continue on Saturday and conclude on Sunday with 18 holes each day. Live scoring is being provided by Golfstat with a link at UNLVRebels.com.
