Aztecs Take First Game Of The Series

May 9, 2013

Box Score

SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (21-29, 7-9 MW) suffered a 5-1 defeat to the San Diego State Aztecs (33-18, 11-5 MW) on Thursday evening at the SDSU Softball Stadium in San Diego. Both starting pitchers carried scoreless no-hitters into the fourth inning before the Aztecs broke through with three scores off of two hits and assistance from a Rebel miscue.

Through three frames of action, only one runner had reached base safely - SDSU's Lorena Bauer on a walk, but to no avail. After UNLV had left one on in the top half of the fourth - Katie Uriarte on a walk, the home squad got its first two batters on safely via walk and an error. With runners on first and second, Bauer delivered a two-run double down the left field line to break open the affair. Following a line out, Kamerin May hit a single up the middle that plated two more to push the lead to three.

The Rebel offense notched its first hit of the game off a single by Alyssa Cordova in the fifth before three more followed in the sixth. Samantha Juarez and Stefany Valentino connected on back-to-back hits before Tayler Aleman laced a single to right. Juarez motored around third and scored UNLV's lone run of the game after May - SDSU's catcher - wasn't able to hang onto the ball when attempting a tag.

The Aztecs scored twice more in the sixth when Bauer hit a two-run home run down that snuck past the foul pole in left field. Patrice Jackson scored on the long ball after initially reaching on a single.

Bauer concluded the game 2-for-2 with three RBI and one run. She was the only batter in the game to amass multiple hits.

Rebecca Arbino (19-12) picked up the win for SDSU in complete-game fashion. Arbino struck out 11 against one walk, while giving up one run off of four hits.

Amanda Oliveto (18-16) was tagged with the loss in six innings of work. Oliveto gave up five runs (four earned) off of four hits. She struck out four, but walked three.

The two squads meet again on Friday night at 5:00 pm in a nationally televised showdown. The game will be aired by CBS Sports Network (DirecTV 613/Cox Cable 333).

NOTES: With one RBI in Friday's game, Aleman moved into an eighth-place tie with Julie Crandall (1995-98) in UNLV's career record book with 121 runs batted in.
