LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Three freshman scored their first career goals and staked UNLV to a 3-0 lead on the way to a 5-0 rout of Portland State on Friday night in women's college soccer action at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels improved to 2-1 on the season with the win, coming in the second game of the UNLV Nike Invitational, while PSU dropped to 0-3.
"We talked before the game about playing with a full effort by everyone tonight, not 85% but full effort," said UNLV head coach Michael Coll. "We got full effort tonight, and then all of a sudden the goals started flowing. I was not surprised by how well our freshmen played tonight, we expect that from them, but it was still nice to see. I'm also happy that we could give our fans a good show tonight as well. "
The Rebels took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when a defensive misplay by Portland State in the box led to the ball going to freshman Gaby Vazquez, who quickly lobbed a shot to the top left corner for the score in the 33rd minute. That would end up being the halftime score as well, as shots were at a minimum in the first half, four for PSU to three for the Rebels.
It was a different story in the second half. UNLV continued to wear down the Vikings, and would hold a 13-5 edge on shots. The Rebels went up 2-0 in the 72nd minute after a run of shots in the box led to Jordan Magnin tracking down a deflected shot. The freshman placed the ball to the right post for her first score of the year, while Jenn Wolfe was credited with an assist.
Then the Rebels sealed the game with a three-goal flurry in a span of 3:04. Susie Bernal set up the third goal when she drove down the right side before sending a cross to the middle of the box, where first-year player Brittney Gideon one-timed it to the left post for a 3-0 lead in the 82nd minute. Wolfe would score her third goal of the season on a blast to the top left corner from the top middle of the box, thanks to an assist from Denali Murnan. Murnan then factored in the next goal as well, sending a long pass over the Viking defenders to Bernal, who broke away, sidestepped a charging PSU goalie before calmly placing the ball in the back of the net for her first score of the year, and 5-0 lead for UNLV in the 86th minute.
Kylie Wassell came up with three saves in goal to post her first shutout of the season for UNLV. Caitlin Plese finished with four stops for the Vikings. UNLV would hold a 16-9 edge on the night in shots, 10-4 in shots on goal, and 7-5 in corner kicks.
The Rebels will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 1, when they host LIU Brooklyn at 1 pm, while the first game of the day will see Portland State and New Mexico State play at 10:30 am. All games are held at Johann Field.
