LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team opened its 2014 dual-match season with a convincing 6-1 victory over New Mexico State Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
UNLV began the day by winning two doubles matches for one point. Ace Matias and Denys Pume downed Naveen Manivannan and Marc Westgate 6-1 on court one and Tamas Batyi and Dimitar Petrov defeated Paul Denele and Charles Baron 6-2 at the second position. The final match was then halted.
In singles play, UNLV picked up points with five straight-set wins.
Matias breezed by Westgate 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1; Batyi downed Denele 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2; Pume got by Strahinja Trecakov 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3; Petrov used a marathon third-set tiebreaker to down Germain Degardin 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (17-15) at No. 5; and Jakob Amilon outlasted Patrick Pfister 6-5 (4), 6-4 on court six.
"New Mexico State is always a tough opponent and today was no exception," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "We had to fight hard at every position. It was also great to see our two new freshmen (Petrov and Amilon) get a win in their first college match as Rebels."
Next up, the Rebels host a doubleheader on Saturday. UNLV plays Southern Miss starting with doubles at 10 a.m. and then faces Weber State at approximately 2 p.m. Admission to all UNLV matches is free of charge.
