LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team jumped back into the win column Thursday with its 3-1 come-from-behind victory (21-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-22) over the Air Force Falcons. In front of 796 fans, the Rebels fought back from a 1-set deficit to win the three subsequent frames on "Victory for Victoria Night" at the Cox Pavilion.
With the triumph, UNLV improved its record to 14-5 overall and 2-2 in the Mountain West and snapped a two-match losing skid. Air Force, on the other hand, fell to 9-10 on the year and 3-2 in league play.
More impressively, the win maintained perfection for the Scarlet & Gray over Air Force in Las Vegas. UNLV pushed its all-time home record against the Falcons to 19-0 and its overall advantage to 35-2. Thursday's win was the 30th straight for the Rebels.
The Rebels outhit the Falcons .272 to .170 with the help of a slight edge in kills (59-55) and errors (19-27) despite attempting 18 fewer attacks (147-165). The home side opened up with a .128 efficiency in set one, but turned things around with .324 and .364 clips in the second and third, respectively. They closed out the affair with a .293 effort in the fourth. The visitors, on the other hand, jumped out with a .294 average in the opening stanza, but were unable to match that figure the remainder of the contest.
"I liked our focus after losing the first set," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Our hitters stepped up and the blocking was solid. It was great to see our two Texas women shine tonight; Ceannia (Kincade) played a really good match offensively and defensively and Ashely (Owens) came in and really helped turn things around. Daryn (Glenn) made some amazing defensive plays at critical times. This was a good win for us as Air Force has been playing very well."
UNLV was paced by double-doubles from Glenn, Kincade and Alexis Patterson. Glenn combined a team-best 14 kills with 16 digs for the feat to go along with three assisted blocks, one assist and one ace. Kincade went the kill-dig route, as well, with 13 of the former and 11 of the latter, plus two total blocks (one solo) and one assist. Patterson dished out a match-high 48 assists and 11 digs for the feat. She also pitched in five assisted blocks and four kills.
Besides Glenn and Kincade, the Rebels had two others notch double figures in kills. Alyssa Wing and Katlin Winters threw down 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Wing recorded three digs and two total blocks (one solo) compared to Winters' eight total blocks (three solo).
Ashley Owens, who entered the match in the second set, was errorless offensively with five kills off of 11 swings. Owens hit a match-high .455 and also had five assisted blocks and two digs.
Allison Davies joined Glenn, Kincade and Patterson in double-digit digs with her match-high 20.
UNLV played the match with an honorary guest coach, Victoria Godkin, on the bench. The local 15-year-old and former Dig This! VBC Player was diagnosed with Sacral Chondroblastic Osteosarcoma (bone/cartilage cancer) in February. She has since undergone numerous chemotherapy treatments in New York and Las Vegas.
Air Force got a double-double from Hillary Keltner, who had 44 assists and 12 digs. Shelley Spires led the Falcons with 20 kills, while teammate Rebecca Bates was tops on the squad with 16 digs.
UNLV returns to action Saturday at 6:00 pm with its "Block Out Cancer Night" against New Mexico (11-6, 4-1 MW), who comes to Las Vegas after it suffered a 3-2 loss at San Diego State Thursday.
