Rebels Suffer Home Setback To The Broncos

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to the Boise State Broncos at the Cox Pavilion Saturday night. Something had to give in the Mountain West match that pitted two squads riding lengthy winning streaks against each other. The Rebels carried a run of six straight victories into the showdown, while the Broncos stretch sat at five. Unfortunately, it was the visitors from Idaho that kept their successive run alive behind set scores of 25-20, 18-25, 22-25, 25-22.

With the loss, the Scarlet & Gray's overall record dropped to 25-7 and 13-4 in the MW. UNLV, who sits in second place in league play, has one match remaining - Tuesday at 6:00 pm, which is being billed as "Senior Night" - and holds a one-match lead over the Wyoming Cowgirls (12-5). Earlier in the day, #9 Colorado State sealed up its sixth straight conference crown with a 3-0 triumph over the San José State Spartans.

The Broncos (18-11, 11-6 MW) outhit the Rebels by 76 points (.280 to .204) with help from an 11-kill advantage (66-55), while the latter committed one more error (21-20) off three more attack attempts (167-164). Both sides opened up with their best hitting efficiencies with BSU registering a .395 average to UNLV's .333 clip. The Broncos managed to stay within a .175 (third set) to .325 (fourth) range the remainder of the contest, while the Rebels tallied .067, .275 and .163 efficiencies in the subsequent stanzas.

"This was a rough night," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "We simply got outplayed and out hustled. We played so tentatively and that's not like us. Kudos to Boise State though - they played a great match. We need to get back to the way we play."

Three Rebels had double-doubles with Ceannia Kincade and Daryn Glenn going the kill-dig route, while Alexis Patterson combined assists and digs for the feat. Kincade paired 12 kills, which tied for the team high, with a team-best 15 digs for her sixth double-double of the year and eighth of her career. Glenn partnered 11 kills with 12 digs for her eighth double-double in 2014 and 26th of her career. Patterson notched her eighth double-double of the year, as well, behind a team-best 43 assists and 12 digs.

In all, UNLV had a trio of players tally a team-best 12 kills in the match. Besides Kincade's output, the Rebels got 12 apiece from Alyssa Wing and Bree Hammel, who had tied for the match high in total blocks with five (one solo).

For only the second time this season, the Rebels had five players register double-digit dig totals. After the aforementioned double-double trio, UNLV got 12 apiece from Carly Riehl and Allison Davies.

The Broncos also had three of their own rack up double-doubles and were led by Sierra Nobley (30 kills, 12 digs), Alyssa Gammel (12 kills, 12 digs) and Sarah Baugh (53 assists, 15 digs). Hannah Hubbard had a match-high 21 digs for BSU.

Tuesday night's affair against San Diego State is also $2 Tuesday. Fans can purchase discounted tickets online and in advance of the match for $2. Hot dogs and soda will be sold for the low, low price of $2.

NOTES: Saturday's loss to Boise State marked the third instance that the Rebels have had a six-match winning streak snapped this season ... UNLV's record in four-set matches dropped to 7-3 and its marks when trailing 0-2 and 1-2 in a match to 1-3 apiece ... In UNLV's career record book, Glenn became the program's all-time leader in matches played (120), while Davies moved into a tie for second place (119) with Melody Nua (2005-08) ... Davies and Nua are tied for second in sets played with 442 ... Patterson moved into seventh in assists (1,132) ... In UNLV's single-season record book, Patterson moved into eight place in assists (1,132).
