Nov. 8, 2014

Box Score: UNLV 3, Air Force 1

USAFA, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team continued its winning ways on the road this week with its 3-1 victory (25-22, 20-25, 25-14, 26-24) against the Air Force Falcons at Cadet East Gym. The Rebels staked themselves to a 1-0 lead before the Falcons fought back to even the match at 1-all prior to the intermission. The visitors from Las Vegas came out of the break with a quick win in the third set to regain the advantage. Air Force tried its best to stave off the loss in the fourth set, but came up short when UNLV took the final frame by two points.

The win improved UNLV's overall record to 22-6 and maintains the team's hold on second place in the Mountain West behind a10-3 mark. Air Force, who dropped to 12-16 for the year and 6-8 in the MW, was dealt its 31st straight defeat by the Rebels.

The triumph signified the 2014 edition's ninth "true" road victory, which is a program best and surpassed the eight notched by the 1998 squad. It is also the 14th win (nine away and five neutral) in matches played away from the friendly confines of the Cox Pavilion. Those 14 tallies trail the benchmark of 15 achieved by the 1984 team.

UNLV outhit Air Force by 59 points (.233 to .174) with a slight edge in kills (55-54). The hosts managed to attempt five more swings (155-150), but committed seven more errors (27-20). In the three sets they won, the Rebels hit .200 or better, which included a staggering .400 showing (13-1-30) in the fourth set and a .351 clip (19-6-37) to open the contest. The Falcons had their best effort in the first frame with a .267 average, but were held within a range of .139 (third set) and .167 (second) the remainder of the affair.

"Tonight was really a tight and tense match," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "We were not clicking on much tonight, but we managed to pull out some good kills and blocks at critical points. Alexis (Patterson) was sick Friday and spent the day in bed, but came back tonight and put on a very good offensive performance. No matter what, two wins on the road are fantastic."

The Rebels were led offensively by 11 kills apiece from Ceannia Kincade and Alyssa Wing. The former racked up a double-double - the fifth of the season and seventh of her career - in the contest by combining her double-digit kill output with 13 digs. She also added six assisted blocks and four assists. The latter chipped in two digs and one assist.

Bree Hammel and Daryn Glenn followed closely behind with each throwing down nine kills, while Katlin Winters had seven of her own. Hammel and Winters were also instrumental on the defensive side of the net with four total blocks (one solo) and nine total blocks (two solo), respectively. Glenn had two assisted blocks to go along with seven digs.

Alexis Patterson was effective at the net with six kills off a team-best .357 hitting average and a team-high 44 assists. Patterson tallied four digs and three assisted blocks, as well.

In addition to Kincade's and Glenn's double figures in digs, the Rebels got a team-high 16 from Allison Davies. The senior libero factored directly in four points with two assists, one kill and one ace.

Air Force's Akokwe Clement had a match-best 20 kills off a staggering 52 swings. Clement's teammate, Hillary Keltner, had the Falcons' only double-double off a combination of 45 assists and 17 digs. Rebecca Bates led all defensive players in digs with 18.

With the conclusion of the New Mexico and Air Force road trip, UNLV will now play four of its final five matches at home. Two of those contests take place next week with visits from in-state rival Nevada, Reno and San Jose State. The UNLV-UNR affair will have Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and sponsored by Barrick Gold implications associated with it. Both matches are slated for 6:00 pm first serves.
