LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Playing without its No. 2 player, the UNLV men's tennis team lost a tough 4-3 match to No. 53 Utah Thursday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels fell to 4-7 on the year.
UNLV began the day by sweeping three doubles matches for one point. Denys Pume and Ace Matias downed Cedric Willems and Slim Hamza 8-4 at the top position; Dimitar Petrov and Jakob Amilon defeated Ben Tasevac and Devin Lane 8-5 at No. 2; and Willie Sublette and Ozzy Abraham won by the same score over Alejandro Medinilla and Matt Cowley on court three.
In singles, UNLV leader Matias, who transferred to the Rebels from Utah, eased by Hamza 6-1, 6-1 at the top and Pume swept Tasevac 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. The match was tied at three when the Utes took the only three-setter of the day on court four to clinch it.
Next up, UNLV will host Ball State on Saturday beginning with doubles at 2 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
