TUCSON, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 23 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 4-under-par 284 on Friday and is in a tie for fourth place at the National Invitational Tournament, which is being played at OMNI Tucson National (par 72, 7,200 yards).
California has a 13-shot lead on the rest of the field after firing a 20-under 268. Host Arizona is second at 7-under, followed by Oklahoma State at 6-under. The Rebels are tied with San Diego State and are followed by Texas A&M and Marquette, who are both tied for sixth at 1-under.
Individually, California has the top two individuals as Brandon Hagy leads at 8-under 64 and Michael Weaver is in second at 5-under. There is a five-way tie for third place at 4-under 68 that includes UNLV sophomore Zane Thomas. Thomas had six birdies on Friday along with two bogeys.
Other Rebels: junior Carl Jonson is tied for 17th at 1-under, junior Kurt Kitayama is tied for 26th at even par, sophomore AJ McInerney and freshman Taylor Montgomery are both tied for 34th at 1-over, while freshman Chris Tuulik, who is competing as an individual, is also tied for 34th.
The tournament features 14 teams and 81 individuals. Play continues on Saturday and concludes on Sunday with 18 holes each day beginning at 8 am MT. Live scoring is available on the internet courtesy of Golfstat through a link at UNLVRebels.com.
