LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team saw its six-match win streak snapped by Stanford in extremely windy conditions Wednesday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels fell to10-8 while the Cardinal improved to 6-2.
UNLV began the day by taking the doubles point in their sixth straight outing. Denys Pume and Ace Matias won 8-5 over Maciek Romanowicz and John Morrissey at the top spot and Dimitar Petrov and Jakob Amilon outlasted Trey Strobel and Jamin Ball 8-6 on court three in the clincher.
In singles play, Stanford won the first two completed matches to take the lead. Amilon then downed Robert Stineman 7-6, 6-1 at No. 6 and Pume got by Daniel Ho 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 to put the hosts back on top. After the Cardinal got a another win to square things, the match came down to court three where Romanowicz needed two tiebreakers to eventually defeat Tamas Batyi, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5).
"Tough loss today in difficult conditions but it was a great college tennis match," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "I was proud of Tamas (who trailed 5-2 in the second set before rallying) for battling until the very end."
The Rebels will next host Montana on April 2 beginning with doubles at 2 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
