COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - No. 16/20 UNLV baseball (25-15/13-8 Mountain West) dropped the series finale 7-6 to Air Force (14-25/5-13 MW) on Saturday.
Joey Swanner led off the game with a single to second base, stole second and later scored on a T.J. White ground out to give the Rebels an early lead.
UNLV held its lead by retiring the Falcons in order in the first two frames, but then Air Force took the lead after plating two runs on three hits in the third inning.
The Rebels recaptured the lead in the fifth inning when Craig Shul hit a bases loaded single that drove in Edgar Montes and Joey Armstrong.
The Falcons tied the game at three in the sixth when Travis Neubeck hit a two-out solo home run.
UNLV broke the tie in the seventh when Justin Jones singled through the right side, driving in A.J. Hernandez.
In the home half of the seventh, the Falcons took a lead they would not relinquish by scoring four runs on four hits.
The Rebels rallied by scoring two runs in the top of the ninth, but they could not push the tying run across and lost 7-6 to the Falcons.
Swanner (2-for-4), Jones (2-for-4), Patrick Armstrong (2-for-5) and A.J. Hernandez (2-for-3) each recorded multiple hits in the game to lead UNLV.
Sophomore Bryan Bonnell (4-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work. Brayden Torres and Kenny Oakley each made relief appearances in the game.
The Rebels return to Las Vegas to host New Mexico for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6:05 p.m. PT.
