Rebels Start Road Swing At UC Riverside

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (28-15/16-8 Mountain West), which is ranked No. 27 by Collegiate Baseball News, heads to Riverside, Calif. to play UC Riverside (18-21), which starts a seven-game road swing for the Rebels. UNLV will bus down to face UCR for one game on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. PT. The Rebels will then continue on the road for three games in the state of South Carolina beginning on Saturday. Most recently, UNLV, which sits atop the the Mountain West, is coming off of a three-game sweep then ranked No. 24 New Mexico. The Lobos had not been swept since 2011, but the Rebels beat UNM 11-2 on Friday, 14-6 on Saturday and 14-2 on Sunday. The Highlanders most recently dropped a series to conference foe UC Santa Barbara. UCR lost the first two games to the Gauchos 6-2 and 6-5, but avoided the sweep by winning 7-3. SCOUTING THE REBELS

Later in the week, the Rebels will head to South Carolina for one game against James Madison (May 3) and two games against Clemson (May 4-5). Most recently, UNLV, which sits atop the Mountain West, is coming off of a three-game sweep of then ranked No. 24 New Mexico. From the mound, Erick Fedde (8-2, 1.76 ERA) leads the Rebels and the Mountain West with 82 strikeouts in 76.2 innings of work. Opponents are hitting .209 against Fedde this year, which ranks first in the Mountain West and his eight wins are also the most in the MW this season. Saturday starter John Richy (7-3, 3.18 ERA) is third in the MW with 74 strikeouts. Kenny Oakley (3-3, 2.51 ERA) is sixth with 60 strikeouts in 61.0 innings pitched, and is project to start against UC Riverside on Tuesday. Sunday starter Bryan Bonnell (5-3, 2.15 ERA) has struck out 36 batters this season and has surrendered only nine walks in a team-high 83.2 innings of work. Brayden Torres (1-1, 2.95 ERA) leads the team with six saves and has struck out 24 batters in 21.1 innings of work. The Rebels had a field day from the plate against UNM and now boast a team batting average of .300. Morgan Stotts (.333), T.J. White (.328), Joey Swanner (.317), A.J. Hernandez (.316), Patrick Armstrong (.315), Erik VanMeetren (.314), Edgar Montes (.308) and Justin Jones (.308) are all hitting over .300 this season. White leads the team with 15 stolen bases and 35 RBI. Pat Armstrong has a team high six home runs and has driven in 34 runs. Montes and Joey Armstrong are tied for a team-high five outfield assists this season.

SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS
UC Riverside (18-21) comes into the midweek matchup with UNLV (28-15/16-8 Mountain West) having won only four of its last 13 games. The Highlanders beat No. 19 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, but dropped the overall series. UCR also swept UC Davis April 17-19. Since facing UNLV in March, the Highlanders are 12-14 and in 2014 are 13-7 when playing at the Riverside Sports Complex (The Plex). UCR is projected to send freshman righty Angel Landazuri (2-2, 4.00 ERA) to the mound. Landazuri did not pitch against UNLV in the team's previous meeting and is most recently coming off of a relief appearance against USCB. He allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on two his and struck out two in 1.2 innings of work. He has 25 strikeouts and 10 walks to his credit in 36.0 innings of work this season. What is favorable to UNLV is that Landazuri has allwed 10 extra base hits this season and teams are hitting .308 off of him. From the plate, UC Riverside is led by Francisco Tellez, who is hitting .333 this season. Nick Vilter (.321), Devyn Bolasky (.317) and Thomas Walker (.301) are hitting over .300 for the Highlanders, who are hitting a collective .277 as a team. Vilter leads the team with nine home runs, but was limited to one hit against the Rebels earlier this season.

UNLV-UC RIVERSIDE HISTORY
UC Riverside leads the overall series with UNLV 21-14, but the Rebels have won the last three meetings. Earlier this season, UNLV beat UCR 5-4 in 10 inning at Earl E. Wilson Stadium on a walk-off home run by Johnathan Torres. The Rebels also beat the Highlanders twice last season, outscoring them 44-17.

ON DECK
UNLV heads back on the road to wrap up the season series with UC Riverside on Tuesday and then will travel to Clemson, S.C. to face James Madison on Saturday and will play two games against Clemson on Sunday and Monday. The Sunday contest will be played at the single-a affiliate of the Boston Redsox in Greenview, S.C.
