SUGAR GROVE, Ill. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 7-over-par 295, it's lowest of the tournament and second-lowest of the day, but finished in ninth place Saturday at the 2014 NCAA Sugar Grove Regional, which was played at Rich Harvest Farms (par 72, 7,151 yards).

Weather improved on the final day of the tournament as temperatures climbed to the mid 50s with mostly sunny skies. The first two rounds were played under wet and windy conditions with cooler temperatures.

Illinois won the team title with a 54-hole score of 16-over 880 after a final-round 7-over 295. UAB finished second at 18-over, Purdue was third at 30-over, and USC and California both tied for fourth at 32-over. By finishing in the top five at the regional, those teams will move on to the NCAA Championship finals, which will be played May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. (hosted by Wichita State).

Clemson was sixth at 34-over, Kent State was seventh at 36-over and Jacksonville State finished eighth at 43-over. UNLV had a 54-hole total of 48-over 912.

Illinois' Brian Campbell led the tournament wire-to-wire, earning medalist honors at 5-under 211 after a final-round even-par 72. USC's Anthony Paolucci finished second, four shots back at 1-under 215. Kent State's Taylor Pendrith, who tied for third at 2-over, was the top individual finisher from a team that didn't advance to nationals, so he will get a chance to play at the finals as an individual.

UNLV junior Carl Jonson was the Rebels' top performer as he tied for 25th at 11-over 227 after a final-round 1-under 71. Junior Kurt Kityama finished tied for 29th at 12-over after a final-round 3-over, sophomore Zane Thomas tied for 31st at 13-over after a final-round 5-over, sophomore AJ McInerney tied for 40th at 16-over after a final-round even par 72 and junior Nicholas Maruritied for 53rd at 21-over after a final-round 9-over..

There were a total of six 54-hole regional tournaments. The Sugar Grove Regional consisted of 14 teams and 75 individuals. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each of the regionals advanced to the national finals.

This year marked UNLV's 26th straight appearance in a NCAA Regional, which is the record for most consecutive appearances.
