Rebels Head To Clemson For Three Games

CLEMSON, S.C. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (28-16/16-8 Mountain West), which is ranked No. 27 by Collegiate Baseball News, travels to Clemson, S.C. to play face James Madison (15-26) and No. 26 Clemson (25-19) Saturday thru Monday. The Rebels will play JMU on Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, which is Clemson's home stadium, at 9:00 a.m. PT. On Sunday, UNLV and Clemson will face off in Greenville, S.C. at the Fluor Field, which is the home to the Boston Red Sox's single A affiliate, the Greenville Drive, at 11:00 a.m. PT. The Rebels will wrap up their road trip with a game against the Tigers in their home ballpark on Monday at 3:30 p.m. PT. The two games between UNLV and Clemson can be seen live on MyLVTV in Las Vegas, which is channel 12 (SD) and 1012 (HD) for Cox Cable subscribers and channel 21 (SD/HD) for Dish Network and DirecTV subscribers.

SCOUTING THE REBELS

Most recently, UNLV, which sits atop the Mountain West, dropped a midweek game at UC Riverside 8-2 and swept No. 24 New Mexico last weekend. The Lobos had not been swept since 2011, but the Rebels beat UNM 11-2 on Friday, 14-6 on Saturday and 14-2 on Sunday. From the mound, Erick Fedde (8-2, 1.76 ERA) leads the Rebels and the Mountain West with 82 strikeouts in 76.2 innings of work. Opponents are hitting .209 against Fedde this year, which ranks first in the Mountain West and his eight wins are also the most in the MW this season. He will miss his scheduled start at Clemson so he can rest for Mountain West play against San Diego State next weekend. John Richy (7-3, 3.18 ERA), who will get the nod against James Madison, is third in the MW with 74 strikeouts. Bryan Bonnell (5-3, 2.15 ERA), who will pitch on Sunday, has struck out 36 batters this season and has surrendered only nine walks in a team-high 83.2 innings of work. Kenny Oakley (3-4, 2.77 ERA) is slated to pitch on Monday against the Tigers. Brayden Torres (1-1, 2.95 ERA) leads the team with six saves and has struck out 24 batters in 21.1 innings of work. From the plate, the Rebels are led by Morgan Stotts (.346), T.J. White (.328), Joey Swanner (.317), A.J. Hernandez (.316), Patrick Armstrong (.313), Erik VanMeetren (.312) and Edgar Montes (.307). White leads the team with 15 stolen bases and 35 RBI. Pat Armstrong has a team-high six home runs and has driven in 34 runs. Montes and Joey Armstrong are tied for a team-high five outfield assists this season.

SCOUTING THE DUKES

James Madison (15-26) comes into the game with UNLV (28-16/16-8 Mountain West) having won three of its last four games. The Dukes took the series at Towson and then won at Maryland 6-3 in midweek action. Before facing the Rebels, JMU will play one game against Clemson on Friday night.Sophomore Mark Gunst (2-6, 6.98 ERA) is projected to pitch against UNLV on Saturday. Gunst has made 12 appearances, 11 starts, for the Dukes and has struck out 24 and has walked 24 in 49.0 innings of work this season. From the plate, JMU is led by Matt Tenaglia, who is hitting .333 this season and has driving in a team-high 33 RBI. Kevin Husum (.327), Conner Brown (.313), Ty McFarland (.307) and Kyle Weston (.306) are hitting over .300 for the team this season. McFarland has a team-high eight home runs and has started every game for the Dukes.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS

No. 26 Clemson (25-19) limps into its weekend series with UNLV (28-16/16-8 Mountain West) having won only one of its last six games. The Tigers were most recently swept by No. 11 Miami (Fla.) and dropped a midweek game against Liberty. Before facing UNLV, Clemson will host James Madison. The first game of the two-game set will be played in Greenville, S.C., about an hour away from the Clemson campus, at Fluor Field, where the minor league affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, the Greenville Drive, play their home games. The Rebels and Tigers will play the final game of their series on Monday at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT in at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Projected to start for the Tigers on Sunday is Daniel Gossett (5-0, 1.70 ERA) and on Monday Jake Long (2-3, 4.80 ERA) is projected to start. From the plate the team is led by Tyler Krieger and Steve Wilkerson, who are hitting .333. Wilkerson is tied for a team-high in home runs with four. Garret Boulware (.308) and Tyler Slaton (.306) are also hitting over the .300 mark for Clemson in 2014.

UNLV-CLEMSON HISTORY

Clemson leads the overall series against UNLV 5-4 and the two teams most recently split a two-game series in 2001 in Las Vegas. The Rebels last visited the Tigers in 2000 and dropped the first two games of the three-game set, but avoided the sweep by winning the finale.

ON DECK

UNLV wrap up it seven-game road swing at conference foe San Diego State. The Rebels and Aztecs will play a three-game set beginning on Friday, May 9 at 6:00 p.m. PT. The two teams will also meet on Saturday, May 10 at 6:00 p.m. PT and on Sunday, May 11 at 1:00 p.m. PT. UNLV took two of three from SDSU when the two teams met in Las Vegas earlier this year.
