Rebels Suffer Three-Set Loss To Washington

Sept. 12, 2014

Box Score: #5 Washington 3, UNLV 0

SEATTLE (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (7-3) had its five-match winning streak snapped in a 3-0 decision (25-10, 25-7, 25-23) by the #5 Washington Huskies (9-0) Friday evening at the Alaska Airlines Arena. The Rebels concluded their first day at The Invitational in Seattle 1-1 following their 3-0 victory earlier in the day.

UW outhit UNLV .319 to .030 behind two sets of .406 or better hitting efficiencies. The hosts only committed a pair of errors in those two frames, while connecting on 30 kills off of 60 attempts. The Huskies managed a .151 clip in the third set with 53 swings that resulted in 17 kills against nine errors. The Rebels, on the other hand, opened up with a .000 showing (8-8-32) before they suffered a -.077 (4-6-26) in set two. They closed the contest with a .119 effort (9-4-42).

Overall, the Huskies threw down 26 more kills (47-21) and recorded seven fewer errors (11-18) off a slight edge in attacks (113-100).

UNLV was paced by Alexis Patterson's third double-double of the year behind a combination of 18 assists and 11 digs. Patterson also chipped in one kill and one ace.

Peterson wasn't the only Rebel to notch double digits in digs as teammate Allison Davies had a match-high 18.

Bree Hammel led the squad on both sides of the net with team bests in kills (six) and total blocks (three: one solo).

Alyssa Wing added five kills, while hitting at .273.

"We just couldn't get on track from the beginning," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "You have to give Washington a lot of credit. They kept us out of our offense in the first two sets and we just couldn't stop them. I was very proud of the way we came out in the third set and really battled."

UW's Katy Beals and Krista Vansant had double-doubles for the winning side. Beals partnered a match-high 21 assists with 15 digs to achieve the feat compared to Vansant's pairing of 13 kills and 13 digs. The former was also one of four Huskies to hit .429 or better with a minimum of six kills in the match.

Beals split setting duties with Jade Finau, who had 17 assists and five digs.

Besides the double-figure digs racked up by Beals and Vansant, UW's Cassie Strickland added 10 of her own.

The Huskies got 10 assisted blocks from Lianna Sybeldon, who entered the week ranked 11th in total blocks and 12th in blocks per set. In all, they had 11.0 total team blocks with one solo and 20 assisted putbacks.

UNLV closes out its stay in Seattle Saturday with a 1:00 pm contest against UC Davis at the Connolly Center.

NOTES: UNLV's match against #5 Washington Friday evening was the sixth instance (0-6) that it has faced a top-five team since the rebirth of the program in 1996 ... In UNLV's career record book, Daryn Glenn moved into a tie for 10th place in kills (879) with Sara Nehf (2007-10).
