LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating San José State, 74-40, at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday night, and will now travel to Boise, Idaho, for another Mountain West game on Tuesday, Jan. 13, against Boise State at Taco Bell Arena (12,480).
The Runnin' Rebels recently closed out the toughest stretch of schedule in program history, playing three top-15 teams (then-No. 14 Utah, then-No. 3 Arizona and then-No. 13 Kansas) plus a trip to Laramie, Wyo., in a 16-day span. The three-game streak included a loss at Kansas and two close losses in Mountain West play: at Wyoming (76-71) and to Nevada, Reno (64-62). Prior to the league opener on New Year's Eve, UNLV had won two straight games and five of six.
The Runnin' Rebels, who had to replace all five starters from a year ago, have used a rotation this season that includes five freshmen, one sophomore and two seniors. Freshman guard Rashad Vaughn leads the team in scoring with an average of 17.3 ppg, which is second in the Mountain West. Sophomore forward Christian Wood has nine double-doubles this year, which ranks 10th in the country, and has averages of 14.9 ppg (second on the team, 8th in MW), a team high 10.0 rpg (1st in MW, 18th in the country) and 2.9 bpg (2nd in MW, 20th in the country). Freshman forward Goodluck Okonoboh leads the team and is second in the MW in blocks with 3.1 per game (13th in the country, 2nd among all freshmen). Senior guard Cody Doolin leads the squad and MW with 4.8 apg and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.5, which leads the conference and is 14th nationally.
As a team, the Runnin' Rebels are third in the nation in blocked shots (7.6 bpg), third in total blocks (121), third in defensive rebounds per game (29.13) and 18th in field-goal percentage defense (36.9).
Tuesday's game at Boise State at 9 p.m. MST/8 p.m. PST will be televised on ESPNU with Doug Sherman and Craig Robinson calling the action. Jon Sandler and Robert Smith will handle the UNLV radio call, which may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/100.9 FM in Las Vegas.
