BOISE, Idaho (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (8-6 overall, 1-1 Mountain West) suffered a 3-1 loss to the Boise State Broncos (9-6, 1-2) at Bronco Gym Thursday evening. The Rebels, who lost by set scores of 25-22, 16-25, 14-25, 19-25, began the match with a first-set win, but was not able to carry that momentum into the second and subsequent sets in their first road affair in Mountain West play.
Boise State outhit UNLV by .111 points (.208 to .097) with assistance from advantages in all three attacking categories. The Broncos notched 26 more kills (63-37) and attempted 15 more attacks (159-144); however, the Rebels committed seven fewer errors (23-30).
UNLV opened the bout with a .235 hitting efficiency compared to BSU's .067 effort. Unfortunately, the Rebels tallied .098 and -.098 outputs in the second and third, respectively, while the Broncos hit .289 and .125 in those same stanzas. Both squads displayed upped their attack in the fourth, as BSU's .389 was a match-best, while UNLV's was .214.
"We started off very strong, both hitting and block, but after the first set we let Boise State control the match," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Our passing and outside hitting needed to be much better tonight."
The Scarlet & Gray got double-figure kill totals from both Ceannie Kincade and Bree Hammel. The former had a team-high 13 to go along with nine digs and three assisted blocks, while the latter recorded 10 kills, seven assisted blocks, four digs, one assist and one ace.
Alexis Patterson dished out a team-best 32 assists and added seven digs and two assisted blocks.
Carly Riehl led the Rebels in digs with 19 and also chipped in one assist.
The Broncos got a double-double from Sarah Baugh, who paired a match-high 54 assists with 12 digs for the feat. Baugh also contributed five kills, two assisted blocks and one ace.
Baugh's setting helped teammates Kaitlyn Oliver (17 kills), Katelyn Kinghorn (14) and Sierra Nobley (13) tally double digits in kills.
Defensively, the Broncos got a match-high 25 digs from Maddi Osburn.
UNLV returns to action Saturday morning in Logan, Utah against the Utah State Aggies. First serve is scheduled for 11:00 am MT (10:00 am PT).
