Sophomore Shota Takada's first career goal couldn't have come at a better time, as he tapped in a shot on the far post for a 2-1 golden goal victory for UNLV over second-place Utah Valley in WAC men's soccer action Sunday afternoon from Johann Memorial Field. The win keeps UNLV very much alive for a second seed and first round bye in next month's WAC tournament as they improved to 10-4-1 overall, 4-2-1 in league play. The Wolverines meanwhile dropped to 12-4-1, and 5-2-1 in the WAC.
It was Senior Day for the Rebels, and three seniors played a part in both goals in the victory. UNLV took an early 1-0 lead when senior Bradley Kamdem sent a ball from the left side into the box to his unmarked classmate Andy Rodriguez, who quickly blasted a shot to the top left corner of the goal in the 13th minute. However, Utah Valley was awarded a penalty kick in the 18th minute when it was ruled that Rebel goalkeeper Richard Garness fouled a Wolverine in the box on what appeared to be a 50-50 ball. Austin Buxton took the penalty kick for Utah Valley and scored to tie the game at 1-1.
That would be the last score of regulation. UNLV shut down the Wolverine offense for the majority of the game, limiting them to just two shots in the first half. As the second half wore on, Utah Valley started to find more space and was able to get off six shots in the second half, as was UNLV, but again the half would end in a 1-1 tie.
Going to overtime for the second time this season and second in two weeks as well, UNLV was determined to put the game away quickly. Right off the bat senior Rodrigo Fuentes drove into the box on the right side and unleashed a blast that was just high. UNLV kept the pressure up on the Wolverines, and again Fuentes was behind the attack, this time from the left side. He sent in a long low shot across the cage that would have been wide, but Takada was in a perfect position on the back post. He slid a kick in from four yards out for the game-winner in the 93rd minute.
UNLV finished the game with a 15-8 overall edge on shots after taking both shots in the extra period. Corner kicks were also 6-2 in favor of the Rebels. Garness made two saves on the day, both impressive stops on hard blasts from the Wolverines. Collin Partee was credited with three saves for Utah Valley.
The Rebels will finish the regular season with three straight road games. First up will be a Friday, Oct. 30 contest at UMKC with a 5 pm (PT) start.
