Oct. 29, 2015 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's soccer team is having outstanding success not only on the field but also in the classroom as a pair of Rebels have been named to the Academic All-District VIII Men's Soccer team, the organization of sports information directors (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday. Not only did seniors Bradley Kamdem and Corey Ackley earn their first career academic recognition, this marks the first time since 2000 that the Rebels have placed two players on the All-District team. Both Kamdem and Ackley will now advance to the national ballot for Academic All-American honors.
Kamdem, a defender from Paris, France, is a three-year starting member of the backline that has posted 14 shutouts over the past two years, and has helped the Rebels rank third in the WAC in total goals allowed (17) and goals against average (1.11). He has been a key factor on offense as well over his career. That included a weekend in which he scored a pair of goals while helping UNLV allow a single goal over two games, and that performance earned him WAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 14. Kamdem has earned academic all-league honors the past two seasons, holds a 3.38 cumulative GPA and will graduate with a degree in business management.
Ackley, a forward and native of Las Vegas, has notched seven points this season for UNLV and has 19 in his career. He has posted a total of three goals this season for the Rebels. Ackley, a kinesiology major, is a three-time academic all-league honoree with a 3.62 cumulative GPA.
The two were both starters for last year's Rebel squad that swept the WAC titles and reached the NCAA Tournament. They have helped this year's team to a 10-4-1 record (4-2-1 in the WAC), and a No. 3 ranking in the West region.
Student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be a starter or important reserve to be eligible for the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District teams. District VIII is made up of schools in California, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Utah.
