LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team turned in a successful Friday at its own annual Larry Easley Memorial Classic being played at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Celebrating the state holiday in style, the host school has four singles players and one doubles team still alive going into Saturday's action.

In Flight One, Ruben Alberts defeated Trevor James of Arizona, 0-6, 6-1, 6-1, and then rallied past Abe Hewko of Boise State, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, later in the day. Joining him in the semifinals is Alexandr Cozbinov, who downed Linus Holthey of Mesa Community College, 6-1, 6-4, and then doubled up Felix Schueller of Grand Canyon, 6-3, 6-3.

In Flight Two, Richard Solberg advanced after a bye and then a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Will Adkisson of Arizona, 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles play, Alberts and Jakob Amilon earned a bye to move into the quarterfinals.

"It was a good day for the Rebels," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "We have three guys playing for a spot in the singles finals tomorrow so we are looking forward to Saturday."

Players from seven other programs are competing in the individual event: Arizona, Boise State, Oregon, Oklahoma State, NAU, Grand Canyon, and Mesa (Ariz.) Community College.

The annual tournament was renamed in 2010 in honor of UNLV Hall of Famer Larry Easley, who passed away from illness in 2005 at the age of 57. Easley coached the UNLV men's tennis team longer than anyone in history and produced sometimes-spectacular results over his dozen seasons from 1993-2002, including producing five All-Americans and two NCAA individual champions.
