Rebels Defeat Wolf Pack on Senior Night 3-1

Oct. 30, 2015

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer (11-9-0, 6-5-0) defeated Nevada, Reno (6-11-2, 3-7-1) 3-1 on Friday night in a Mountain West match at Peter Johann Memorial Field to ensure the four seniors honored on Senior Night wouldn't be playing the last games of their careers. The Rebels ended the regular season on a four game-winning streak to clinch the sixth seed in next week's conference tournament.

Not even three minutes in the Rebels took the lead for good. Susie Bernal crossed the ball from the right corner into the box, and Jordan Magnin booted the ball from the middle of the box into the top left of the net for her second goal of the season. UNLV had several more scoring chances and had a 10-5 shot advantage in the half.

In the 51st minute Dakota Blazak scored her third goal of the year to double the Rebels' lead. Off a corner kick from Magnin, Blazak headed the ball in just a few feet outside the net. Nevada, Reno answered back in the 58th minute with a goal when Daisha Jones-Oglesby kicked in a ball that was bouncing around in the box. Samantha Weber put the game out of reach for the Wolf Pack when she scored on a penalty kick in the 70th minute for her second goal of the season. The Rebels' defense held on for the rest of the match for the win.

"From the get-go I knew we had the talent and ability to get into the top six (of the Mountain West)," said head coach Chris Shaw. "We always knew we could do it. It's just a little frustrating we left ourselves in that position (to have to win four straight games), but I'm not surprised at all we did it."

UNLV seized the three points available as part of the Governor's Series contest, the all-sports competition between the two schools that is presented by NV Energy and Barrick Gold. UNLV now leads Nevada, Reno 6-3 in the series with wins by football and women's soccer. The Rebels remain undefeated at home against the Wolf Pack with a 6-0-0 record and 26-3 scoring advantage.

With her ninth assist of the season in the second half, Magnin broke the school single-season assist record. She passed the eight assists by Macy Jo Harrison in 2012.

Goalkeeper Jessie Clark (5-2-0) recorded four saves to earn the win. UNLV finished the game with 18 shots and 10 on goal compared to Nevada, Reno's 13 and five. Magnin and Brittney Gideon both had three shots, and four other Rebels had two shots a piece.

Seniors Jodi Barber, Nicole Candioglos, Denali Murnan and Weber were honored with a ceremony for the last home game of their careers. Family members joined the four seniors in a ceremony at midfield before the game.

Sixth seed UNLV takes on the third seed New Mexico next Tuesday in San Diego at 4 pm in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament. The winner will take on second seed San Jose State on Thursday, November 5 at 4 pm in the semifinal round.
