LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (15-12 overall, 8-7 Mountain West) swept the Air Force Falcons, 3-0, Saturday night at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels, who had six attackers throw down at least five kills, claimed the victory behind set scores of 25-19, 25-19, 26-24.
The win pushes the Scarlet & Gray's dominance in the head-to-head series with Air Force to 37-3 with 32 of those wins occurring in the last 33 outings.
UNLV outhit Air Force by 144 (.312 to 168) despite attempting 17 fewer attack attempts (96-113). The Rebels registered three more kills (42-39) and committed eight fewer errors (12-20) in the contest that saw them hit .379 and .382 in the first two sets. The victors only misfired seven times between the first (four errors) and second (three); however, they had five miscues that led to a .182 efficiency in the third. The Falcons, on the other hand, opened up with a .346 output only to see a .149 and .075 follow in subsequent sets.
"This could have been a very tough one for us after losing Bree (Hammel), so I'm very proud of the way everyone stepped up," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. Ashley (Owens) and Elsa (Descamps) played well offensively and defensively. Carly (Riehl) really came through, especially considering she was sick all day. Alyssa (Wing) hit well and had some great digs."
Alyssa Wing paced the Rebels with a team-high 12 kills behind a .370 hitting efficiency. Wing chipped in defensively with seven digs and one assisted block.
Ashley Owens, who hit .353, was instrumental on both sides of the net with nine kills and five assisted blocks.
Elsa Descamps notched six kills, while Ceannia Kincade, Alexis Patterson and Sadie Stutzman had five apiece.
Besides her five kills, Patterson dished out a match-best 35 assists to go along with nine digs and three assisted blocks.
In the back row, Carly Riehl had 14 digs â€" a match high, while Kincade had seven of her own.
The Falcons got a match-high 13 kills from Akokwe Clement, who also had six digs, four assisted blocks, one assist and one ace. Sarah Hellman (22 assists) and Shanleigh Conlan (10) split the setting duties for Air Force, while their teammate Rebecca Bates had a match-high 14 digs.
UNLV returns to action next week with a home bout Wednesday (Nov. 18) against #12 Colorado State. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
