LARAMIE, Wyo. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (15-14 overall, 8-9 Mountain West) suffered a straight set loss to the Wyoming Cowgirls (23-6, 13-4 MW) Saturday afternoon at the UniWyo Sports Complex. Wyoming claimed the match by set scores of 25-19, 25-16, 25-23.
Alexis Patterson registered her 20th career double-double for UNLV in the contest. The setter combined a match-best 22 assists with a team-high tying 13 digs for the feat. She also chipped in four kills and three assisted blocks.
In all, UNLV got at least three kills from six different players. Alyssa Wing led the squad with seven kills, while Elsa Descamps and Ceannia Kincade followed closely behind with six and five, respectively. The trio also helped out in other areas with Wing contributing seven digs, three assisted blocks and one assist. Descamps had three assisted blocks, one dig and one ace to Kincade's eight digs, two assisted blocks and one ace.
UNLV owned a 0.5 advantage in blocks (10.5 to 10.0) in the bout with Ashley Owens involved in seven (all assisted) of the Rebels' putbacks. At least five members of the Scarlet & Gray had a minimum of three assisted blocks.
The Cowgirls outhit the Rebels by 148 points (.210 to .062) backed primarily by a differential of 17 more kills (46-29). UNLV managed to commit one more error (21-20) in four more attack attempts (128-124) than the hosts. Wyoming began the match with a .256 hitting efficiency and topped it one set later with a .367 in the second. It's lowest output of .078 occurred in the third set, and was actually .020 points lower than UNLV's .098 clip. The Rebels, on the other hand, topped out with a .143 in the first, but misfired in the second for a -.086 in the second.
"We just aren't killing the ball the way we need to," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "We started strong in the first and third sets, but just didn't finish them."
Wyoming's Kayla Slofkiss paced the winning side with her double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs. Slofkiss also picked up two solo blocks and aced a serve. Her teammate Bridget Shanahan also had 10 kills in the bout to go along with one dig and one assisted block.
Cori Aafedt and Courtney Chacon split the setting duties for the Cowgirls with the latter dishing out 22 assists to the latter's 20. Both helped out defensively with Chacon notching eight digs to six from Aafedt.
UNLV returns to Las Vegas and the Cox Pavilion for its regular-season finale Tuesday night at 6:00 pm against the Fresno State Bulldogs. Prior to the match, the program will recognize its two outgoing seniors â€" Kincade and Taylor Price.
