Feb. 7, 2015 Box Score: #11/13 Washington 10, UNLV 7
Box: UNLV 10, Bakersfield 0 (5 innings)
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team split its pair of contests on the second day of its Sportco Kick Off Classic held at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels (3-1) suffered their first loss in a 10-7 back-and-forth tilt to the #11/13 Washington Huskies (3-1). They followed that outing with a 10-0, run-rule triumph over the Bakersfield Roadrunners (0-3) in five innings.
Seven players paced UNLV's offense with at least two hits on the day. Fahren Glackin, Jamie DePippo and Merina Ili had three hits apiece. Ili led all with a .750 batting average (.750), while Glackin and DePippo had .500 hitting clips (3-for-6). Ili and Alyssa Cordova knocked in three RBI apiece, while the latter and Samantha Juarez both scored four times.
In game one vs. the nationally ranked Huskies, UNLV held the lead twice before it witnessed the visitors turn things around with six unanswered runs between the fifth and sixth innings.
UW struck first off an RBI double in the second only to see the Rebels counter with three in the bottom half of the frame. Juarez and Ili were responsible for the RBI with the first on a sacrifice bunt couple with a throwing error and the other two off a double, respectively.
The score remained in UNLV's favor until the Huskies began a barrage of three straight, three-run innings. UW used the long ball for its three run fourth with a solo homer from Courtney Gano and a two-run shot from Kimberlee Souza. That 4-3 lead was short-lived for the squad from Seattle, as the Scarlet & Gray got two scores off a throwing error and a third off an RBI double by Glackin.
Unfortunately, the game swung in the Huskies' favor with the three-run fifth. The three tallies in the sixth were of the insurance variety to distance them from UNLV.
The Rebels were able to get one run back in the sixth when Garie Blando recorded an RBI single to plate Juarez from third after she led off with a double.
UW's Hailey Bator (2-0) earned the win in 3.0 innings of relief. Bator was touched for four runs (one earned) off of five hits. She relieved Casey Stangel, who threw the first two frames and allowed two runs (one earned) off of three hits.
Morgan Ettinger (0-1) was saddled with the loss for UNLV after she gave up six runs on six hits in two innings. Ettinger was the third of three Rebel hurlers with Francesca Foti and Alex Petrolia combining to throw the first five innings with four runs and nine hits against them.
In game two vs. Bakersfield, the Rebel offense scattered 10 hits and got help from four Roadrunner miscues to blank the visitors from the Golden State.
After a scoreless first, UNLV took the lead for good when it executed a suicide-squeeze bunt between Jade Yadao-Valdez and Cordova. The former stepped up with runners in scoring position and dropped the bunt in front of CSUB's Kelsie Monroe (0-3), who attempted unsuccessfully to get a streaking Cordova at the plate.
An inning later the lead grew to three runs with an RBI single by DePippo and a wild pitch thrown by Monroe. Glackin led off the third with a double and moved to third on a fly out by Juarez. Following a walk to Cordova, DePippo laced a single to left to bring the score to 2-0. Moments after Kwyn Cooper loaded the bases with a single, Emily Haslinger stepped into the batter's box only to have Monroe uncork an offering to plate Cordova.
Two Roadrunner miscues contributed to two runs in the fourth to help UNLV's cause. CSUB's Sydney Raeber entered the circle in relief and got the first batter she faced out, but walked two - Janine Petmecky and Glackin - in succession. Ili then laced a single to center that Madison Bundy mishandled and allowed each runner an additional base. Emilie Valadez, who was pinch running for Petmecky, scored on the fielding error. The Rebels loaded the bases, once again, with a walk to Cordova. DePippo then popped up toward the right side, but second baseman Selena Gonzalez dropped the ball and it allowed Glackin to score.
The Rebels tacked on five more in the fifth to close out the contest by run-rule fashion. Yadao-Valdez and Blando opened up with singles that put runners on the corners. The pair then pulled off a double steal for the inning's first run. Ili and Juarez added two more singles to the hit column before Cordova capped the night with a three-run dinger to center.
Cooper improved to 2-0 with a complete-game effort. She allowed four hits and walked one against four strikeouts.
CSUB combined to use three pitchers with Monroe (0-3) tagged with the loss in three innings of action. She gave up three runs, while Raeber was touched for six (five earned) and Amber Mills gave up one.
UNLV returns to action Sunday in its tournament finale against the #15/15 Minnesota Golden Gophers at 9:00 am.
