COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (8-10, 2-7 Mountain West) plated five runs in the top of the ninth inning, but fell one run short as Air Force (8-9, 5-4 MW) claimed a 11-10 victory on Sunday at Falcon Field.
The Rebels trailed the Falcons 11-5 heading into the top of the ninth inning and pinch hitter
A.J. VanMeetren led off the inning with a walk. Two batters later
Joey Armstrong singled to centerfield.
A.J. VanMeetren would score when
Payton Squier hit a double down the left field line and Armstrong came in when
Erik VanMeetren singled to left field. Squier scored on a
Morgan Stotts single and
Erik VanMeetren would score on a
Edgar Montes single. Stotts brought the Rebels within a run after
Joey Swanner grounded out to second, which pushed the tying run in Montes into scoring position. UNLV would also get the go-ahead run aboard after
Parker Hokuf was hit by a pitch, but a ground out to third base ended the game.
The Rebels got off to an early lead in the second inning as Armstrong drew a bases loaded walk to plate the first run of the game. The Falcons answered in the home half of the second by plating a run of their own and tying the game.
Air Force hung a crooked number on UNLV in the third by plating four runs. The Rebels answered with four runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game. Armstrong, again, drew a bases loaded walk to get the scoring started for UNLV.
Payton Squier followed up by grounding out to second base, which plated a run and
Erik VanMeetren cleared the bases by hitting a single up the middle, scoring two runs.
The Falcons answered by plating four runs in the home half of the fourth to take a 9-5 lead. Air Force tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh innings to complete its scoring.
The Rebels' starter
Bryan Bonnell (1-3) took the loss after allowing nine runs, five of which were earned, on 11 hits in 3.1 innings of work. Senior
Joey Lauria pitched well in relief, allowing two runs run on three hits and struck out four in 3.1 innings of work.
Corey Wilson and
Matt Thomas also pitched in relief for UNLV.
Armstrong led UNLV from the plate, finishing 1-for-2 with two runs scores, two RBI and he drew three walks. He also recorded two outfield assists in the game. Squier and
Erik VanMeetren each finished 2-for-5 for the Rebels and VanMeetren drove in three runs, while Squier drove in two.
UNLV will return home and resume its schedule with a midweek game against Grand Canyon. The Rebels and Antelopes played earlier this season in Phoenix, where the `Lopes won 7-0.
Tuesday's game against Grand Canyon will mark first "$2 Tuesday" of the year for UNLV baseball. Fans can enjoy $2 tickets (when bought in advance and online), $2 hot dogs, $2 soft drinks and $2 off beer. Also to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, the concession stand will have "green beer" available.
This season at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, fans will enjoy a new and improved concession stand. Smoken Sams catering will be providing entrees that range from barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers to nachos, chicken fingers and fries. A variety of beverages will also be available.
