LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field program got a second-place finish from Cortney Miller (Las Vegas/Calvary Chapel Christian HS) in the hammer throw Friday to open up the Spring Invitational and Sheila Tarr-Smith Multis at Myron Partridge Stadium. Miller registered a personal-best measurement of 195-5 (59.58m) on both her fifth and sixth attempts. The distance was one inch better (195-4/59.54m) than the toss she uncorked at the 2014 Mountain West Outdoor Championships, and it also improved her third-place standing in UNLV's all-time performance list.
Besides Miller's performance, UNLV also got a personal-best throw from Vanessa Sierra in the same event with her mark of 154-2 (47.01m). Kyra Day (Las Vegas/Cheyenne HS) also participated in the hammer with distance of 145-5 (44.34m).
The Rebels have two competing in the women's heptathlon, which had four events contested Friday. Amari Norris (Las Vegas/Silverado HS) sits sixth amongst collegiate competitors with a total of 2,794 points. Norris had her best showings - third place - in the 100m hurdles (14.56) and 200m (26.01). Kylee Vandenberg is eighth (2,769 points) and took first in the shot put (37-2.25/11.33m).
Saturday will kick off at 9:00 am with the women's shot put and the women's 5000m. The men's 4x400m relay will conclude the track slate at 3:30 pm, while the men's javelin will draw the field events to close at 4:00 pm. The meet's last event is the decathlon's 1500m at 5:00 pm.
Participating in this weekend's meet alongside UNLV will be BYU, Cal State Fullerton, Weber State, Southern Utah, Utah Valley, Westminster, Cerritos, La Verne and Illinois (men). Besides the collegiate participants, there will be others that have exhausted their eligibility as well as world-class competitors, such as: Carmelita Jeter (three-time London Olympic medalist and three-time World Outdoor gold medalist), Gia Lewis-Smallwood (two-time USA Outdoor champion), Leslie Cole (2012 World Indoor silver medalist) and Uhunoma Osazuwa (Nigeria/2012 London Olympian).
Jeter, who is one of the fastest women in the world, will compete in the 400m this weekend and was once coached by UNLV sprint coach Larry Wade in 2007.
Admission for the meet is $5 for adults. UNLV students with proper I.D. and children 12 and under are free of charge.
