LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 75th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 5-2 early-evening victory over Montana at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Wednesday.
Even with top singles and doubles player Ace Matias sitting this one out, the Rebels improved to 11-6 overall while the Grizzlies of the Big Sky Conference fell to 7-6.
UNLV began by taking the two completed doubles matches to forge a 1-0 lead. Ruben Alberts and Jakob Amilon downed Tomasz Soltyka and Peter Mimnagh-Fleming, 6-2, at the top spot while Adam Gage-Brown and Denys Pume stopped Semion Branzburg and Yannick Schmidl, 6-1, on court two.
In singles, the visitors tied things by taking a quick win at the third position. However, three straight-set wins sealed it for the hosts: Amilon downed Branzburg, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2; Pume defeated Soltyka, 6-3, 6-2, at the top spot; and Ruben Alberts closed out Alexandr Rudenco, 6-3, 6-0, on court five. The Rebels' final point came from Alexandr Cozbinov's 6-2, 6-4 win over Victor Casadevall at the fourth position.
