LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team (23-26 overall, 9-9 Mountain West) rebounded from two earlier defeats to the San Jose State Spartans (33-16, 13-5) this weekend with a resounding 8-0 victory in six innings of play. The Rebels were able to score at least one run in each inning while Janine Petmecky held the potent Spartan offense at bay in a four-hit, complete-game effort.
The affair had the same fell to it as Saturday's contest, which saw SJSU capitalize on its opportunities while UNLV was leaving runners on the base paths - primarily in scoring position. In Sunday's tilt, the teams combined to leave 12 on base with seven at either second or third base.
Garie Blando and Alyssa Cordova ignited the Rebel offense with two hits apiece. The former chipped in a team-high three RBI and scored once while the latter knocked in a pair and scored a run. On an individual note, Blando extended her career-best hitting streak to 19 games.
The Scarlet & Gray got its offense started early with a run off an infield single by Cordova. Fahren Glackin, who was on second base following a one-out walk and a wild pitch, scored on the base hit - pop up - that was aided by the sunshine and wind.
The lead was pushed to three runs when Blando laced a two-run double down the left-field line. Jamie DePippo and Jade Yadao-Valdez made their way home off the hit after the duo had initially reached via a double and single.
UNLV used the long ball to add one run an inning to the scoreboard in the third and fourth. Cordova went deep first with a solo shot in the third while Blando crushed an offering from Madison Fish (14-5) one inning later.
The Spartans' defense and pitching contributed to a tally in the fifth behind a hit-by-pitch and a couple of errors. Katelyn Linford entered the circle in relief of Fish in the stanza, but hit Haslinger with an offering. Haslinger then gave way to pinch runner Lexie McKinnon, who quickly made her way around the bases on a grounder by Cordova. Emma Entzminger, who moved from catcher to third, misplayed the ground ball for a fielding error and then followed that with a throwing miscue when she over threw first base.
The game came to a close in the home half of the sixth when Samantha Juarez drilled a two-run double to right center to invoke the eight-run rule. Stover and Francesca Foti came around to score on the hit.
Petmecky picked up her third win of the season in the affair. She struck out three against four walks.
Fish was saddled with the loss in 4.0 innings of work. She was touched for five runs off of six hits and two walks. She struck out three. Her successor, Linford, threw 1.2 frames of relief and allowed three runs (two earned) off of two hits and a walk.
UNLV will hit the road for the final time in the 2015 regular season with a three-game conference series in Fort Collins, Colo., against the Colorado State Rams. The set will begin Friday, May 1 at 4:00 pm MT (3:00 pm PT).
