Aug. 30, 2015 FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV bounced back from a slow first half, pushing its attack on Northern Arizona in the second before claiming a 1-0 overtime victory thanks to Susie Bernal's golden goal in the 99th minute in women's college soccer action on Sunday afternoon from Lumberjack Stadium. The Rebels improved to 2-2 on the season with the win, while dropping the preseason Big Sky favorites to 0-3.
With the wind a factor in the first half the Rebels played more of a defensive approach. They would open it up in the second half however, and used their bench to keep players fresher. That led to a decided offensive advantage following halftime, as the Rebels took eight of the first nine shots of the second half. NAU came back with two of the next three shots to end the second half, and then took the first three shots of overtime. The last shot of the game belonged to the Rebels though, as Bernal, a Las Vegas native, hit a left-footed shot to the top corner in the 99th minute for the game-winner. It was her second game-winner in the past four games, while sophomore Chidera Akubuilo was credited with an assist on the goal.
""A combination of the altitude and the direct approach of the Northern Arizona attack had us playing a little back in the first half," said UNLV head coach Chris Shaw. "After the second half we looked much better, and probably deserved a goal in the second half. It feels good to pick up the road win though."
UNLV and NAU both finished with 14 shots on goal each, while UNLV had a slight 7-6 edge on shots on goal. The Lumberjacks had all seven corner kicks in the game. UNLV goalkeepers Jessie Clark and Jordan Sallee split the shutout, as Clark started the contest and posted three saves in the first half. Sallee came in at halftime and also finished with three saves in 53:10 minutes of action. Natalie Gilbertson totaled six saves in the goal for NAU.
The Rebels are back in action on Friday, Sept. 4, when they host Utah Valley at 4:30 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
