LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (4-3) jumped back into the win column with a quick, 3-0 triumph (25-16, 25-12, 25-19) over the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions (2-5) to kick off the two-day Rebel Challenge at the Cox Pavilion.
More importantly, the win, which pushed the Scarlet & Gray's record in Las Vegas this season to 4-0, snapped a three-match losing streak occurred at Kansas State's Varney's Invitational last weekend. In fact, the Rebels have won five straight played at the Cox Pavilion and nine of their last 10 dating back to the 2014 campaign.
UNLV reeled off its best hitting efficiency of the season with a .379 output compared to a .121 effort from SLU. The 258-point differential between the two squads is the largest posted by the Rebels against an opponent this year. UNLV opened the contest with a .219 average before it hit .577 (15-0-26) in the second and .378 (16-2-37) in the third. The Rebels threw down seven more kills (41-34) and committed 16 fewer errors (5-21) despite the Lady Lions attempting 12 more attacks (107-95). UNLV's block was a factor in the win, as well, by a difference of 11 blocks (12.0 to 1.0). The 12.0 team blocks were a result of three of the solo variety and 18 assisted stuffs.
"We had a really good offensive performance today, with very few errors," said UNLV head coach Cindy Fredrick. "It was good to see a lot of our players contribute offensively and on the front line with solid blocking."
Alexis Patterson was one of the Rebels that factored in the match from both sides of the net. Patterson distributed a match-high 31 assists and also contributed five digs, four kills, two total blocks (one solo) and one ace. She recorded a .800 hitting efficiency with the four kills coming against no errors in only five swings.
Alyssa Wing led the Rebels in kills with 10, while Sadie Stutzman had eight -- a career-high -- and seven more from Bree Hammel. Wing (.409), Stutzman (.412) and Ashley Owens (five kills/.444) helped contribute to the team's season-best hitting display.
Hammel, who had two digs and two aces, paced the team's blocking with six total (all assisted). Stutzman followed closely behind with four total blocks (one solo) of her own to go with her seven digs.
In the back row, UNLV's libero, Carly Riehl, notched a match-best 13 digs.
The Lady Lions' Mikayla Shippy fell one dig short of a double-double with nine to go along with a team-high 21 assists. Her teammate Tiffany Thomas led all in kills with 13 backed by a .462 hitting efficiency. The team's libero, Brooke Balser, had 12 digs.
UNLV returns to the court at 7:00 pm to face the Portland State Vikings, who defeated Oral Roberts, 3-0, in Friday's 12:00 pm match. Prior to the Rebels-Vikings tilt, ORU and SLU will square off at 4:30 pm.
