PROVO, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV kept No. 5 BYU scoreless in the first half, but the Cougars scored two goals in the second half to beat their former Mountain West Conference rival 2-0 on Saturday night at South Field. BYU improved to 6-2 while UNLV dropped to 3-5.
Goalkeeper Jordan Sallee in her sixth start of the season kept the Rebels in the game during the first half with six saves. The Cougars put early pressure on Sallee with three shots in the first 11 minutes, but the Rebels also got some chances in the half with four shots in an eight minute span.
Murphy Vasconcelos scored in the first minute of the second half to give BYU the lead, knocking in a shot in the box in the far post. Taylo Isom Campbell put in an insurance goal in the 81st minute, heading in the ball off of a corner kick. BYU outshot UNLV 24-1 in the second half.
"We competed for 45 minutes and had some good chances in the first half," said UNLV Head Coach Chris Shaw. "In the second half we lost a little focus and got punished. BYU is a quality team and tough to beat at home. Ultimately we will be a better team from this game."
Sallee finished with a career-high 13 saves. The Cougars posted 39 shots in the game, while the Rebels had seven shots with four on goal. Denali Murnan led the UNLV attack with with two shots, one on goal. Hannah Alba, Jordan Magnin and Nicole Candioglos also placed one shot on goal each.
The Rebels return to action next Friday against Hawai'i at 7:00 pm at Johann Memorial Field. That contest will start a four game homestand that willl include the beginning of conference play.
