TEMPE, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (6-4) had its three-match winning streak snapped by the 10th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils (9-0) Friday at the Wells Fargo Arena. The Rebels, who lost by a 3-0 decision (10-25, 21-25, 15-25), were paced by a double-double from Alexis Patterson in defeat.
Patterson, a graduate of Northwest Christian High School in nearby Phoenix, also contributed four kills off a .571 hitting efficiency and one ace. Earlier this week, the sophomore setter earned Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week honors.
ASU, who was tabbed to finish second in the Pac-12 Conference this season and is off to its best start since the 1985 campaign, hit at a .280 clip compared to UNLV's .045 output. The Sun Devils began the match with a .364 showing backed by 13 kills against one error in 33 total attack attempts. They connected on 13 and 15 kills in the two subsequent sets, but also committed four and six errors, respectively, for .220 and .273 averages. The Rebels, on the other hand, topped out with their best hitting effort in the second frame at .111.
"Our hitting statistics kind of tell the story of the match, as only our middles hit positive," said UNLV head coach Cindy Fredrick. "We need more balance in the offense with a lot less errors. We had some good defense today, but we absolutely need to cut down on the errors."
The Scarlet & Gray had six players notch a minimum of four kills with a team-high seven from Bree Hammel. Sadie Stutzman threw down six of her own, while Ashley Owens contributed five more.
Patterson was not the only Rebel to reach double figures in digs, as Carly Riehl had a match-high 17 from her back-row position.
The Sun Devils got double-doubles from Cassidy Pickrell and Kylie Pickrell. The former combined a match-high 10 kills with 12 digs for the feat, while the latter paired 19 assists and 10 digs. ASU, who ran a 5-2 rotation, also got 17 assists from Bianca Arellano. Macey Gardner (12 digs) and Halle Harker (11) joined the Pickrells in double-digit digs.
UNLV returns to Wells Fargo Arena Saturday morning for the second and final day of the Sun Devil Invitational. The Rebels will face #6 Illinois at 10:00 am before a 5:00 pm tilt with Texas Southern.
Earlier in the day, Illinois (8-1) dispatched of Texas Southern (2-7) in a 3-0 decision.
