OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 24 UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 14-over-par 294 on Sunday and finished in 14th place at the season-opening OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational, which was played at Olympia Fields Country Club (par 70, 7,353 yards).
The tournament was held at the course that has hosted two U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, many other high-level tournaments and featured a 15-team field that included four of the top-five ranked teams in the country and 10 of the top 25.
No. 3 Florida State shot a final-round 1-under 279 to capture the team title by three shots at 6-over 846. No. 19 Oklahoma State was second at 9-over, while No. 10 Arizona State was third at 15-over. No. 5 Stanford finished fourth at 16-over and host and No. 1 Illinois rounded out the top five at 18-over. The Rebels finished the 54-hole event at 45-over.
Individually, Stanford's Maverick McNealy held on to earn medalist honors by three shots at 7-under 203 after a final-round1-over 71. Illinois' Thomas Detry finished second at 4-under, followed by Arizona State's Alberto Sanchez in third at 3-under.
UNLV freshman Harry Hall was the Rebels' top finisher in his first collegiate tournament. He shot a final-round 4-under 66 to finish tied for ninth at 1-over 211. Sophomore Shintaro Ban finished tied for 36th at 10-over after a final-round 5-over, sophomore John Oda finished 58th at 14-over after a final-round 6-over, sophomore Ben Davis tied for 71st at 21-over after a final-round 7-over and senior AJ McInerney finished 73rd at 22-over after a final-round 9-over.
There were a total of 77 golfers in the field.
UNLV will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 25 at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.
