UNLV came out on top of a tough defensive matchup thanks to Danny Musovski's second game-winner in as many games that gave the Rebels a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga in men's college soccer action Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The win pushed the Rebels' win streak to six, which is tied for the third longest active streak in the nation, trailing just Creighton (eight) and Stanford (seven). It's also the longest for the team since the middle of the 1987 season. UNLV avenged its road loss to the Bulldogs from a year ago, and moved to 6-2 overall on the year, while Gonzaga dropped to 4-4-1.
Neither team could gain an edge in the first half, as while the Rebels held possession for the majority of the opening 45 minutes, they were outshot by the Bulldogs by an 8-3 margin. However, most of Gonzaga's attempts were from far out. Rebel freshman goalkeeper Nathan Bohn, making his first career start, only had to make two saves to keep the game scoreless at the half.
The Rebels came out in the second half looking to make a run at the Gonzaga defense, though the Bulldogs were keeping their backline playing high. UNLV took advantage of that when Tony Murillo placed a perfectly timed through pass that Musovski ran down and received just outside the box. Musovski dribbled inside to take the goalie on one-on-one before sending a shot past him to the right inside post in the 49th minute. It was the Las Vegas native's fifth goal of the year.
That would be the only score UNLV would need, as it put together a stellar second-hand defensive performance. The Rebels not only limited Gonzaga to just five second-half shots, but more importantly to zero shots on goal. That gave Bohm his first career shutout, and was the third for the team overall this season.
Overall, Gonzaga held a 13-6 margin on total shots, only the second time UNLV has been outshot in a game. The Rebels though had three shots on goal to the Bulldogs' two. Corner kicks were in favor of Gonzaga 6-2. Both Bohn and Chris Lowrimore for Gonzaga finished with two shots for the contest.
The Rebels' next action will be their conference opener, as they host Houston Baptist on Friday, Oct. 2 at 7 pm at Johann Memorial Field.
