MANHATTAN, Kan. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (3-1) suffered its first loss of the 2015 season Friday morning to the California Golden Bears (3-1) by a final score of 3-2 (19-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-17, 15-12) at Kansas State's Bramlage Coliseum. The Rebels won the first two sets only to see the Golden Bears awake and claim the subsequent three sets in the first match of the two-day Varney's Invitational.
California outhit UNLV by 63 points (.207 to .144) in the contest despite an attacking efficiency of .038 (21-18-80) through the first two sets of play. After they committed 18 errors before the intermission, Cal only misfired nine times the remainder of the affair. The Golden Bears hit .250 or better in the third through fifth stanzas, including a set-high .417 (16-1-36) in the fourth. The Rebels, on the other hand, started strong with a .250 effort in the first, but never matched that output the remainder of the bout. They combined to hit .230 in the pair of set victories only to produce a .088 display after the break.
The match featured 22 tied scores and nine lead changes with the majority of both figures occurring in the second set â€" 10 ties and six lead changes. UNLV never trailed in the first, which was void of ties and lead changes. Cal led from the start of the third and did not relinquish it save for four ties. The fourth had two ties and two lead changes, while the fifth only saw the lead swap hands once with six stalemates.
The Scarlet & Gray got double-doubles from Alexis Patterson, Bree Hammel and Alyssa Wing. Patterson, who had four kills, two assisted blocks and an ace, combined a team-high 40 assists with 12 digs for the feat â€" the ninth of her career. Hammel and Wing notched their first double-doubles with the former pairing 14 kills with a career-high 16 digs to the latter's 12 kills and 12 digs.
Hammel also contributed three assisted blocks, two assists and one ace to Wing's pair of aces and assisted blocks.
Besides the aforementioned trio with double-digit dig outputs, the Rebels had two more record 10 or more. Carly Riehl led all with a career- and match-high 27, while Ceannia Kincade added 11 more. Kincade was nearly grouped with three of her teammates who had double-doubles, as she produced nine kills. She also had three assisted blocks, two aces and an assist.
The Golden Bears' Alyssa Jensen had the lone double-double for her side with a combo of a match-high 45 assists and 17 digs. Jensen helped four of her teammates amass 10 or more kills.
Cal's Lara Vukasovic had a match-high 16 kills, while Belen Castillo had 14 more and Lilliam Schonewise and Christine Alftin had 10 apiece.
In the back row, the squad from the Bay Area got a team-high 21 digs from Nikki Gombar. Alyssa Jensen and Maddy Kerr each had 17, while Sabrina Blackwell had 14.
UNLV returns to action at 3:00 pm PT (5:00 pm CT) Friday against the Green Bay Phoenix, who will play host Kansas State at 10:30 am PT (12:30 pm CT).
