UNLV kept Cal State Fullerton scoreless for the first 80 minutes of the game but Rebecca Wilson broke through in the 81st minute for the lone goal of the game, giving the Titans a 1-0 victory over the Rebels in women's college soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium. The Rebels saw their win streak stopped at two, while Cal State Fullerton continues its perfect streak to start the season, now at six games.
"The team did a great job of sticking to our game plan," said UNLV head coach Chris Shaw. "Unfortunately we let their most dangerous player get a good look at the goal and we got punished for it. Fullerton is a very good team and I thought we played very well against them. I'm proud of the our performance today and we will continue to improve from games like this one."
The action was back and forth in the first half, with both teams making runs at the other goal. The Titans would hold a slight 7-6 shot advantage, while the Rebels forced Morgan Bertsch to make four saves to keep the game scoreless at the break.
In the second half, Cal State Fullerton pressed its attack more, taking 10 shots with half of them on goal, while none of the Rebels' four shots required a save. The game was still tied entering the final portion of the second half however until Christina Burkenroad sent in a pass from the top of the box to Wilson. She would split two Rebel defenders before scoring her seventh goal of the season.
UNLV finished the game with 10 shots to 17 for the Titans, while corner kicks also were in favor of the home team, 5-2. Jordan Sallee played the first 87:10 of the game in goal for UNLV and would collect six saves. Three players took two shots each for UNLV, led by Brittney Gideon's two shots on goal.
The Rebels next action will be on Saturday, Sept. 12, with a 6 pm contest at former Mountain West rival BYU in Provo, Utah.
