Rebels and Aztecs Play to Double Overtime Draw

Oct. 7, 2016

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Women's Soccer entered Friday night's contest against San Diego State looking for its first victory against the Aztecs since 2008, and while the team wasn't able to secure the win, it did do something it hadn't done in the previous 22 meetings -- play to a tie. Each team traded first-half goals, then went scoreless over the final 65 minutes to each earn one point in conference play. It was also the first time the Rebels ended a match in a stalemate this season.

The draw brings the Rebels' record to 10-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the Mountain West -- dropping them into a tie for second-place in the league standings. Utah State was the only MW team that entered Friday's matches in a tie for first place to secure a victory and grab sole possession of the top spot.

Lily Sender's stellar season continued as she registered her eighth goal of the season in the 21st minute to give the Rebels the early 1-0 lead. The senior's goal came after a corner kick made its way to freshman Georgia Kingman, who sent it in Sender's direction from16 yards out. The Aztec defenders challenged Sender, but she was able to poke it past the defense and the keeper from the top of the six-yard box. It was Kingman's first-career point as a Rebel as she has filled in admirably after fellow freshman Katie Ballou was lost for the year due to a knee injury. Sender, who had just three points in her three previous seasons, leads the Mountain West in both points (23) and goals (8) in 2016.

The Aztecs evened the score at one in the 41st minute on a score by Darcy Weisner, who finished in the back left corner after a touch pass and a cross from Rachel Speros and Victoria Barba, respectively.

From there, the two teams traded opportunities in the attack, with each missing shots in the final 20 minutes of overtime that could have ended the game on the spot. On the night, the Rebels held the slight edge in shots 18-16, while Aztec keeper Gabby English registered 10 saves to Jordan Salle's seven -- a season-high for the UNLV junior keeper.

The Rebels are back in action on Sunday at Peter Johann Memorial Field against New Mexico. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
