EL PASO, Texas (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's golf junior John Oda is in fourth place after the first two rounds of play Saturday at the 42nd Annual Sun Bowl Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic.
Oda shot an opening-round even-par 71, then fired a second-round 4-under 67 and has a 36-hole total of 4-under 138. He is four shots off the lead heading into the final round.
The tournament, which is hosted by the Sun Bowl Association and includes 19 All-Americans from last year, is being played at the par-71, 6,889-yard El Paso Country Club.
Oda, who has earned honorable mention All-America honors in back-to-back seasons as a freshman and sophomore, had three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey during the first round, and six birdies with two bogeys during the second.
Oklahoma State junior Kristoffer Ventura shot two rounds of 67 and holds the tournament lead by a shot at 8-under. LSU sophomore Sam Burns is second at 7-under, while USC sophomore Justin Suh is third at 5-under.
The tournament is one of the premier college golf tournaments in the country. Some of golf's brightest stars have traveled to El Paso to compete in the tournament since its inaugural year in 1976.
Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III, Ricky Barnes, Notah Begay and Jerry Pate are just a handful of past participants who went on to have successful PGA careers. College All-America Golf Classic Alumni have combined to win 50 major championships and have earned over $1.8 billion in career earnings.
To be eligible for competition at the event this weekend, student-athletes must have been named as an All-America team honoree during the previous year as well the U.S. Amateur Champion or Runner Up who still have collegiate eligibility.
The event, which is hosted by the Sun Bowl Association and Western Refining, will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday starting at 8 a.m. MT. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
