LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Jay Green, a 6-foot-5-inch guard who is originally from Sydney, Australia, has signed a national letter of intent to join the UNLV men's basketball program for the 2017-18 season, head coach Marvin Menzies announced Thursday.
Green, who will be a freshman with the Runnin' Rebels next fall, currently attends Hillcrest Prep in Arizona. During the 2015-16 season as a senior at Mountain Ridge High School, he earned second team all-state honors in Arizona's big school league (Division I). He also earned first team all-region accolades after averaging 24 points per game.
"We are so very pleased to add Jay to our 2017-18 roster," Menzies said. He will be a great addition to the Runnin' Rebel family. Jay takes pride in his defensive and also brings a high IQ offensively. He is an athletic, versatile basketball player who will fit nice into our system going forward. He comes from a wonderful family and has particularly high character and academics -- all qualities that typically equate to winning."
Green, an excellent student, finished up his senior year of high school with a 3.9 cumulative grade point average and posted a score of 1800 on the SAT.
"Jay is a very versatile player," said Nick Weaver, coach at Hillcrest. "He can play positions 1-3 at the next level. He is a very good, high-major athlete. A lefty, he is very explosive and has the ability to be a game changer. He can be plugged in at any spot and will be successful. He is a great ball handler with court vision. He plays the point for us and is a mismatch because of his length and athleticism. He is also one of the best on-ball defenders that I have coached. He has a motor and always plays hard."
