LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team has a 22-shot lead after Monday's first day of play at the LMU Invitational, which is being held at Lake Las Vegas' Reflection Bay Golf Club (par 72, 7,556 yards).
The Rebels shot an opening-round 14-under-par 274 and were at 8-under in the second round (through 12 holes) when play was halted because of darkness. UNLV is in first place at 22-under. Cal Poly is second at even-par, while UC Santa Barbara and Saint Mary's are tied for third at 2-over. San Francisco rounds out the top five at 9-over. There are a total of 14 teams competing.
Cal Poly's Justin De Los Santos fired a 6-under 66 during the first round and was 3-under through 12 holes when play stopped during the second round. He leads the field by two shots 9-under.
UNLV senior AJ McInerney and sophomore Shintaro Ban are both tied for second at 7-under. They both carded first-round scores of 4-under 68. McInerney is 3-under through 13 holes in the second round, while Ban is 3-under through 14.
Rebel sophomore John Oda is also in the top five as he is in a two-way tie for fourth at 6-under with UCSB's Brandon Bauman. Oda shot 5-under during the first round and is through 12 in the second, while Bauman shot 3-under during the opening 18 holes and is also through 12 in the second round.
UNLV senior Zane Thomas is tied for seventh at 2-under (71, 1-under through 13), while freshman Harry Hall is tied for 18th at 2-over (73, 1-over through 14).
Competing as individuals for UNLV: sophomore Ben Davis is tied for ninth at even-par (71, 1-over through 13), junior Redford Bobbitt is tied for 13th at 1-over (76, 3-under through 13) and junior Taylor Montgomery is tied for 22nd at 3-over (2-over through 11).
There are a total of 80 players competing.
The tournament will continue on Tuesday morning with the completion of the second round followed by the final 18 holes. The public is encouraged to attend the tournament and admission is free.
