LINHUE, Hawaii (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 1-over-par 289 and finished in sixth place on Friday at the 40th Annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which was played at Kauai's Wailua Golf Course (par 72, 6,991 yards).
The Rebels finished the 54-hole tournament with a total of 6-over 870.
Texas led wire-to-wire to capture the team title at 20-under 844. The Longhorns shot 4-under 284 on Friday. California was one of just two other teams that finished under par, as the Golden Bears finished second, five shots back at 15-under. Texas A&M was third at 1-under, followed by Washington in fourth at 3-over and Virginia in fifth at 4-over. There were 17 teams competing.
Individually, there was a four-way tie for medalist honors at 6-under 210 between Texas' Beau Hossler, Texas' Gavin Hall, California's K.K. Limbhasut and Hawaii's Skye Inakoshi. Texas A&M's Adria Arnaus finished two shots back in fifth place.
The Rebels were led individually by sophomore John Oda, who tied for 18th at even-par 216 after a final-round 2-over 74. Sophomore Shintaro Ban and senior Zane Thomas each tied for 26th at 2-over. Ban was 1-over on Friday, while Thomas was 2-over.
Other Rebels: freshman Harry Hall tied for 36th at 4-over after a final-round 2-under 70 and senior AJ McInerney tied for 49th at 8-over 224 after a final-round even-par 72.
Junior Redford Bobbitt and sophomore Ben Davis both played as individuals. Bobbitt finished tied for 22nd at 1-over 217 after a final-round 3-under 69 and Davis tied for 32nd at 3-over 219 after a final-round 1-under 71.
There were a total of 97 golfers competing.
UNLV's next tournament will be the Southern Highlands Collegiate, which will be held in Las Vegas, March 7-9. It is annually features one of the toughest fields in all of college golf. The public is encouraged to attend the event. There is no cost for admission.
